proxy servers!

in computer networks, a proxy server is a server (or application) that acts as intermediary for requests or clients seeking data from a internet server.

3 uses for a proxy server

 1. To store visited web sites in a cache, therefore speeding up subsequent visits to the same site.
2. To enhance Internet safety and security when browsing by determining the rules on what sites are allowed to be visited.
3. To record everyones use of the Internet.

in light of the above info i feel proxy servers are a important part of the internet and online process!

breach of copyright

Copyright laws are easily broken... hang on, that book looks familiar

19 March 2009

Plagiarism expert finds his work published illegally on a website, writes Hannah Fearn
An academic expert in copyright law discovered that his own work had been illegally distributed on the internet while researching a paper on the problem.
John Biggam, a lecturer in the department of strategy, innovation and enterprise at Glasgow Caledonian University, was undertaking research to show how easy it was to break copyright laws on the internet, when he discovered that one of his own books had been circulated for free without his knowledge or consent.
"I do a lot of work on plagiarism, so I was writing a paper for a conference on the issue," Dr Biggam said.
"The very point I was writing about was how plagiarism and digital piracy was easy to do through the internet. I happened to write that you can take somebody's book, digitally copy it and pass it off as your own."
Dr Biggam was looking for a copy of one of his earlier papers to cite when he stumbled across a complete copy of his book, succeeding with Your Masters Dissertation, on the web.
"I was trying to find one of my own papers, and couldn't find it, so I typed the title into Google. I made the same reference in my book, and up (it) came," he said.
A copy of the entire text had been posted on the website Scribd.com, normally used by authors to share their work or post e-books, where it can be downloaded for free by registered users.
It appears that the original poster of the material, a lecturer with the username Dipanjan Majumdar, at the Rabindra Bharati University in India, had intended for it to be accessed only by his students.
"I think it's a legitimate site, but my book is not free," Dr Biggam said. "Somebody has taken something I own and is allowing others to have it."
He approached his publishers, the Open University Press, as soon as he discovered the problem.
this is a very unfortunate state of affairs for the guy in the story above, but  thats what the copyright laws are there for,to prevent something like this, happening to you and ME!!!!!!!!!!

PARENTAL CONTROLS :(

Parental controls

Parental controls are features which may be included in digital television services, computer and video games, Mobile phones and computer software. Parental controls fall into roughly four categories, content filters, which limit access to age-appropriate content, usage controls, which constrain the usage of these devices such as placing time-limits on usage or forbidding certain types of usage, computer usage management tools, which allow parents to enforce learning time into child computing time, and monitoring, which can track location and activity when using the devices.
Content filters were the first popular type of parental controls to limit access to Internet content. Also television stations began introducing V-Chip technology to limit access to television content. Controls are now being applied to content ranging from explicit songs to objectionable movies available for purchase online. Usage controls are increasing in sophistication; examples include turning devices off during specific times of day, limiting the volume of the music playing in the car, and with GPS technology becoming affordable, it is now possible to know where a child is at curfew.

To turn on Parental Controls for a standard user account

1.       Open Parental Controls by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, and then, under User Accounts, clicking Set up Parental Controls. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2.       Click the standard user account for which you want to set Parental Controls.
3.       Under Parental Controls, click on.
4.       Once you've turned on Parental Controls for your child's standard user account, you can adjust the individual settings that you want to control. You can control the following areas:
now thanks to me, the one the only iain mcmanus you may never need to worry about what your children are looking at again!

norton anti virus 2010 vs mcafee

          Norton anti virus  2010

     Pro                                                                                                                          Cons
Very proactive                                                                                                            No auto-delete of malware
Low performance impact                                                                                           Full scans not quick
Product Overview                                                                                                        not free

Norton AntiVirus 2010 (NAV10) is a new security software product for home and home office use. It is advertised to protect from viruses, spyware, bots, and other threats. NAV10 emphasizes proactive security for the end user without compromising system performance; it is claimed to use just over 10MB of memory. Several new technologies for 2010 are included in NAV10. Sonar 2 technology analyzes files and determines whether they should be trusted or not, and Download Insight Protection helps determine the safety of downloads. Insight technology provides users with relevant information on files in their systems, and for more technical users, information about processes in Windows. These technologies are based on a new concept called "reputation based" security that checks files against a Norton database filled with data collected from Norton's user community.

           Mcafee total protection

The good: Two massive steps in the right direction kick off the 2010 version of Total Protection: the new interface and the overhauled performance. This version should go a long way to fixing McAfee's battered reputation.

The bad: It might not be clear enough that running a full scan when installing will significantly speed up later scans. There's not much in the way of easily accessible live support, either, so if something goes wrong, it may take a while to get a human on the phone.

McAfee debuts its 2010 product line, introducing an overhauled interface and new features in a bid to remain competitive. The change to its interface is as dramatic a shift as the one that Avast introduced in its 2010 suites, although McAfee's new veritcal look is drastically different from any major security program currently on the market. Most of the features in McAfee AntiVirus Plus, McAfee Internet Security, and McAfee Total Protection are not new, but the presentation is so radical that the improvements are likely to be glossed over. Older users of McAfee should note that VirusScan Plus has been renamed AntiVirus Plus.

Iain mcmanus editor and cheif and creator of this wonderful blog would like to confirm that norton is the way to go, as many user reviews have given mcafee a resounding 1 out of 5 stars !

thank you and good night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
